Overview
I built and shipped the official web platform for the Institute for Habits of Mind, designed to support a global community of educators using the 16 Habits of Mind framework. The platform is live at habitsofmindinstitute.org and is positioned as a full ecosystem for resources, certification, community, and AI-powered teaching support.
The Challenge
The Institute needed a modern platform that could do more than "host content." It had to:
- Serve multiple audiences (educators, schools and districts, students and parents, and organizations) from one coherent system
- Make the Habits of Mind framework usable in day-to-day instruction through practical tools, not just PDFs
- Support credentialing and professional growth (certifications, badges, pathways) at scale
- Handle security, privacy, and compliance expectations for an education-facing product
What I Built
1. AI-Powered Teacher and Coaching Tools
I implemented an AI tool suite designed to help educators apply the Habits of Mind in real classroom workflows, including:
- Habit Coach - Interactive assistant aligned to Habits of Mind pedagogy
- Lesson Planner - Habit-integrated lesson design support
- Reflection Tool - Guided metacognitive reflection
- Problem Solver - Structured thinking support
- Assessment Builder - Habit-aligned assessments
The Institute has publicly positioned these AI tools as enabling personalization, reflection, and time savings for teachers as part of the new website experience.
2. Certifications and Digital Credentials
I designed the platform around structured certification pathways (individual, school, district, trainer), with digital badges and supporting materials like workshops, implementation resources, and ongoing community support.
3. Resource Library, Community, and Admin Tooling
The platform roadmap and structure includes:
- A resource library organized by audience, format, habit focus, grade level, and subject area
- Community features like directories, events, forums, and success stories
- Administrative capabilities including CMS-style content management, events, profiles, uploads, and analytics
Technical Architecture
I chose a stack that supports fast global delivery, clean separation of concerns, and scalable feature development:
- Frontend: SvelteKit static site, delivered via Netlify CDN
- Backend: Express.js API hosted on Heroku
- Database: Firebase Firestore (real-time synchronization)
- Storage: Firebase Cloud Storage (secure file hosting)
- AI: OpenAI API integration for coaching features
- Payments: Stripe for certification purchases
Security, Privacy, and Quality Bar
Because the platform touches education workflows, security and trust were treated as first-class requirements. The platform uses:
- JWT-based authentication with encrypted passwords
- Role-based access control for content management
- HTTPS encryption
- GDPR and COPPA-aligned practices
- A commitment not to sell or share student data
On the product quality side, it is built for:
- Static generation and CDN distribution for performance
- Mobile responsiveness
- Accessibility alignment (WCAG 2.1 AA)
Outcome
- Deployed as the Institute's live, production platform (Version 1.0; last updated October 2025)
- Built to support a broad, multi-audience experience centered on the 16 Habits of Mind and an expanding set of AI teaching tools
- Positioned as a comprehensive ecosystem for educator certification, resources, and AI-powered teaching support
